I went out and bought sponges after this piece. Like a lot of things, the idea of using water to smooth the surface seems quite obvious but didn’t really register as an option for these first few pieces. It’s a bit funny how I can spend so much time trying to solve a bigger problem that I don’t see the smaller problems within reach.
The cloth you see is an old sock my partner wore a hole through. It worked like a charm in some ways and less so in others. The biggest problem was the lint that rubbed off and got stuck on the surface of the clay. I’ve highlighted a piece with a white circle that appears toward the end of the video. I retired the sock very quickly and have been using brushes and sponges to tackle this task.
