While I’ve enjoyed working with the air dry clay, I wanted to start experimenting with a clay I could eventually fire and glaze. I found a nearby studio and bought clay to test out. If I liked it, I could then continue sourcing that same clay in the future. For my first test, I decided to try mimicking the pieces I made on day 11 and day 12. I very quickly could tell something was wrong: the clay was clumpy and ‘brittle’ to work with. I couldn’t carve out small bits without making a real mess of everything, so I did some googling. I found a really helpful video by @potterytothepeople and realized I bought clay with a large grog. This makes it great for larger handbuilding but not-so-great for smaller details I wanted. It was a frustrating lesson to learn, but now I can reorient toward projects that work better with the clay.
