Technically this isn’t a new piece, but that’s because I decided to push this piece into a second day. In yesterday’s post, I mentioned that this started as a solid ball of clay. A good and bad aspect of this is how the clay in the middle stays soft. On one hand, the clay is workable for longer, but it also means scraping out very soft, very mushy clay while navigating around the outer parts. By letting it rest overnight (covered in plastic), this reduced the tackiness and made carving out the smaller details more workable.
I’m really happy with this piece. It’s been a few days since making it, and I discovered a small crack that formed as it was drying. This has been a nagging issue for a couple pieces (day 9, for example) which has bummed me out a bit, but I’m currently in the process of testing out ways to fix them. The experience has really driven home the need to be more deliberate about letting the pieces dry slowly though. Hopefully I’ll have some good news to share in the future about both pieces.
