Dragonflies symbolize transformation, new beginnings, and the courage to face change. In many cultures they are said to bring messages from loved ones or those we have lost. With their beautiful wings dancing in the garden, they certainly seem like fairies or messengers from another world.

This ceramic dish is kiln fired stoneware clay that is fired in a kiln three times. After the purple salvia sage flowers are pressed into soft clay, the dragonfly sculpture is added. The piece is dried and bisque fired in a pottery kiln to harden the clay.

The ceramic dish is then glazed and placed into the pottery kiln a second time for the glaze firing. The kiln’s high temperature of 2200°F/1200°C vitrifies the clay and transforms the glaze into a glassy and glossy finish. A final firing adds the accent of real 22kt gold on the rim.

One of the most common questions I am asked is what kind of paint I use and if this can be done at home. It can be done at home if you have a kiln because I’m using ceramic materials and glazes which are heated to 2200 degrees F. No conventional paint is actually used at any point and even the gold rim is a kiln fired process. ✨
If you want to try something similar at home, you can try air dry clay painted with acrylic paints or water color and then sealed with a glossy varnish. The result is not the same as ceramics of course, but it can be done without a kiln and create nice results as well.
