What do owls remind you of? I think of wisdom and intuition, but I also think of the importance of observing and listening. And yes they also remind me of a few favorite movies. Owls seem to be sprinkled with the feeling of forest magic and the powerful spirit that owls embody. The stare of an owl feels protective, all-knowing, like it can see right into you. And somehow owls also manage to be so CUTE with their big blinking eyes. ???? ????
This tiny owl sculpture is sitting among the leaves of an old gnarled tree with accents of real gold that make the dish sparkle with a little forest magic. The leaves are thyme leaves I grew in my herb garden and I love the tiny detailed imprints of the leaves. The video shows the process of creating this ceramic leaf dish and the coloring of the leaves and the tiny sculpted owl. After coloring with ceramic stains, I coat the piece in ceramic glaze and then fire it in a kiln. The high temperatures of the kiln vitrify the clay and melt the glaze - the glaze transforms into a layer of glass that seals the ceramic and creates the shiny surface The ceramic piece is created by hand from start to finish and here you can see many moments of the art creation process.
