How did I get into Yale, Harvard, Princeton, Stanford, Columbia, Brown, Dartmouth, Cornell, UPenn, Johns Hopkins, USC, Northwestern, NYU, Amherst, UC Berkeley, UCI and UCSD?

Here is the secret to keep you from burning out on writing all those college essays…

What are the 4-5 “facets” of you?

Every student has 4-5 “most important” things about themselves. These can be extracurricular activities, academic subjects, random obsessions, your personality, or aspects of your life that you want admissions officers to know. For example, mine were journalism, leadership, poetry, playwriting, and honestly… being a nerd (MCU and theater)! For one of my students, his facets included math modeling and scubadiving; for another student, her facets included her relationship with her sister, AI coding, and community outreach; for another student his facets included his experience on a farm, his spontaneity, and his work in tech.

Your supplemental essays can then mainly focus on these 4-5 facets! Think about what’s important in your life, and then showcase that in the essays by mixing and matching. My supplemental essays mostly focused around the same topics: my experience as a kid reporter, stories from volunteering, mentions about performing spoken word, anecdotes from my playwriting camps, and being a Captain America stan.

By prioritizing what YOU believe is important in your life, we make sure that the college essay questions are serving you, not the other way around! That is why in the Zoom class I teach about how to write your Comm App and Supplements, you’ll end up with 4 supplemental essays that you can mix and match anywhere, that cover everything from your major/academic interests to your community to your “diversity” element to what makes you a Fun Person.
