it’s not just about your stats, or even your list of extracurriculars…
it’s about painting a holistic picture of who you are. And that’s why the ESSAYS are so important.
ESSAYS are a chance for you to showcase not only personality, but tie your entire application together. For me, it was a chance to help unite the many different things I did under one banner of WHY.
My WHY was to tell stories to make people feel less alone. My comm app essay which went viral around the world explained the WHY behind my WHY: I saw the power of stories in my mom’s life, which has galvanized me to use it in my own life for others. This WHY captured all the different things that I did at the time: entertainment journalism, poetry, playwriting, leadership, volunteer work.
you’ve worked so hard throughout your high school career. don’t waste your shot with a lackluster essay that merely goes over what you did; instead, treat college apps as a transformative time where you really get to deeply reflect on who you were, who you are, and who you want to be. writing my own college apps was really pivotal for me not just as a student but as a person: for the first time I was being asked to consider my dreams and plans for the future. I was asked what would be the driving force behind everything I do in the next four years. And in writing these silly little essays, I discovered my PURPOSE (and got into every school i applied to).
so if you want a similarly transformative experience through your apps, you know where to find me.
