In Disney’s Hercules, Megara—or “Meg”—is a sarcastic, smart, and sharp-tongued woman who’s caught in a deal with Hades and ends up falling for the hero. But in Greek mythology, the real Megara’s story is far more tragic—and she wasn’t just a love interest. She was Hercules' first wife… and his greatest loss.
Megara was a princess of Thebes, given to Hercules as a reward after he defended the city. They married and had children together. But their peaceful life didn’t last.
Hera—furious at Hercules for being the son of Zeus and a mortal woman—wanted revenge. She sent a madness upon him. In his frenzy, Hercules murdered Megara and their children, believing them to be enemies.
When he regained his senses and realized what he had done, he was destroyed by guilt. This tragedy became the reason Hercules undertook the Twelve Labors—dangerous tasks meant to purify him of his sins.
In the myth, Megara isn’t saved.
She doesn’t make a deal with a god.
She’s a victim of divine cruelty—
a reminder of how fragile love is in the world of gods and heroes.
Disney rewrote her fate—gave her power, agency, and a second chance.
But in the original myth, Megara’s love story ends in grief, not glory.
