The Real Origins of Princess Jasmine – A New Kind of Fairy Tale Heroine
Princess Jasmine, as we know her from Disney’s Aladdin, is not part of the original story from One Thousand and One Nights (also known as Arabian Nights). Her character was created by Disney in 1992—something new, inspired by modern ideas of freedom, independence, and female strength.
In the original tale of Aladdin, first written down in the 18th century by Antoine Galland, Aladdin is a poor boy from China. The story is filled with magic, genies, and adventure—but the princess? She’s not called Jasmine. Her name is Badroulbadour in some versions, but she has no voice and no choice. She’s simply married to Aladdin after he uses the lamp to gain power.
Disney changed that.
They gave Jasmine:
A name.
A tiger.
A soul.
She became a princess who refused to be told who to marry.
Who challenged the law.
And who wanted more than a palace life.
While Aladdin’s story comes from old tales, Jasmine comes from today’s dreams—a girl who won’t be silent, who won’t be traded, and who won’t settle.
She’s not from legend.
She’s from imagination—
to show that even in a fairy tale,
freedom matters more than gold.
