Upper three string triads are a chord sound played by almost every famous guitar band in their music. This lesson demonstrates how the chord trick is used by famous bands such as; Dire Straits, Jimi Hendrix, AC/DC and Neil Young. The chord trick applies harmonized upper 3 string triads diatonic to “D” Minor.

In this lesson I’ll show you two 4-set chord groups that all sound great when they’re played on any guitar (electric or acoustic). I’ve also composed two example riffs that use these chord types along with easy filler licks.
The chords in this lesson are part of an idea that’s referred to as upper 3-string triads. The coolest thing about them is they all exist from within “D” Minor.

Each example I’ve established for these chords has been designed to be performed with the low open 4th string “D” resonating in the bass. You’ll notice this “D” drone effect on the lessons accompanying MP3 jam-loop.
The upper 3-string triad approach with a drone is often called using the root of a key signature (or in this case a Minor tonal center) as the lowest bass tone.

The open “D” string is left ringing throughout all of the chords as a bass note drone. Both the upper 3-string triad chord patterns and the example riffs of this lesson will demonstrate exactly how to use this idea for rhythm guitar.
