One of the most popular chords on guitar is the open “D.” From beginner to advanced, this chord is used by all. Today we’ll cover one of the best ways I know of to perfectly memorize triads with their associated scale tones from the open “D.”

It’s an easy trick for learning triads that was taught to me years ago and it’s still an idea that I’ll show my own students to this very day.

The lesson begins by focusing on an open “D” chord. From there we’ll switch to a new “D” chord up at 5th position. After that, we’ll switch to another “D” at the 10th position. With the chords, I will also apply a group of associated scale tones.

Step one studies each “D” voicing with its associated scale tones across the three positions. Step two involves an easy to play exercise that will help with both your performance and your overall memorization of everything.

The “D” chord and scale tone approach covered in this lesson is a combination exercise. It targets triads along with their associated scale tones. The chord that is used for all of the demonstrations and the exercise is a “D” Major triad.

The triad inversions focus on; open position, the 5th position and the 10th position. To help you fully understand each triad (and its scale tones), I’ve included an exercise drill. The drill combines everything across the neck so that by the end of the lesson you’ll have this practice system down perfectly.
