According to the National Weather Service, downtown Sacramento saw nearly 2.8 inches of rain in the 24 hours as well as strong winds. A downpour of rain flooded roads, breached levees and even triggered evacuations across the region.
Many Sacramentans woke up on New Year’s Day to see broken branches, snapped limbs and downed trees in their yards and blocking streets and roads. Big trees can be seen everywhere being twisted and broken by the storm. Some trees fell on the roadside vehicle. In addition, major flooding occurred in agricultural areas about 20 miles south of Sacramento, where rivers swelled beyond their banks.
Sacramento County authorities issued an evacuation order for residents of the low-lying community of Point Pleasant near Interstate 5. Officials are asking residents to be patient and avoid driving through any standing water.
The Sacramento region could see up to 3 inches of rain late Wednesday and early Thursday, with wind gusts peaking to as much as 40 miles per hour or more, according to local meteorologist.
