One of the great Jazz-Funk songs composed by Herbie Handcock is Watermelon Man. This arrangement done by Gordon Goodwin for his Big Phat Band is a wonderful chart I had my Ken Loomer Big Band sight read at this club date. I always love to find new arrangements and try them out at these type of gigs. Like always I will make a few changes in the arrangement to fit the style of what my Big Band is all about. I want to make the chart exciting to hear and of course feature my outstanding musicians. I thought it would be cool to add a drum solo in this chart and then bring the band back in for a big finish. As a drummer leader, I always study the score to make changes that will make this a fun arrangement to play. The Big Phat Band I have always enjoyed so much and doing this great Gordon Goodwin arrangement of Watermelon Man is what Big Band music is all about. I get to drive the Big Band with my classic Slingerland drums and support my musicians who always give me 100% IN THEIR PERFORMANCE.
