It is mainly young women who can be seen in the paintings of this great artist.
Young women, sitting in an armchair, looking out of the window, casually putting on their shoes or pausing, lost in thought, looking at an object.
In his works, this artist often chose the motif of the reader, a young woman, alone or in a circle of friends.
The lamp is a recurring pictorial element and, like the glow of the fireplace or the light of twilight on a terrace, shows the painter's characteristic approach to light.
This creates a special and intimate atmosphere in the works so that the viewer almost has the impression of disturbing the scenery.
Delphin Enjolras, was born in Courcouronnes in 1857. He studied first at the École de Décoration de la Ville de Paris and later at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris.
In 1890, his works were exhibited for the first time at the Salon de Paris, in which he regularly participated in the following years.
After having started his career with landscape painting, Delphin Enjolras then turned to portrait painting of young, elegant women at the beginning of the 20th century.
Probably one of Enjolras’s most famous works is a Young Woman Reading by a Window.
Enjolras died in 1945 and today his works are in possession of the Musée du Puy and Musée d'Avignon, among others.
