Soulages died on Wednesday in the French port city of Sète.
Born in the southern city of Rodez in 1919,... the abstract painter was fascinated by cave paintings in France and Spain from an early age.
Soulages first caught the attention of the art world in the late 1940s,... for his pieces using bold calligraphy.
He is also best known for his abstract work and his exploration of the color black,... in the series “outrenoir,” or “beyond black".
