“The Eternal Feminine,” painted by Paul Cezanne sometime around 1877.
This painting puzzled me, and I’d love to hear your thoughts about it. The first time I saw it, I thought there must be some interesting symbolism at play, but my research has yet to show a definitive interpretation that seems right. Some say the painting is about the power of female beauty- but that doesn’t make much sense to me; why then would her form seem so shapeless, and some of the men turned away from her? Another idea I had is that this might reference the lust of the eyes, but then why would her eyes be the ones bleeding?
An interesting fun fact that I encountered while researching is that Paul Cezanne was very uncomfortable with painting nudity. He once admitted that painting the human figure, especially nude women, made him feel awkward.
What do you all make of this? Thanks for taking the time to watch and learn with me ❤️
