Helen (Hallie Kate Eisenberg), who has been without sight or hearing since she was a child and, naturally, without language, has lived an isolated life in the dark. Unable to give vent to her inner pain and loneliness, Helen can only keep tormenting the parents who care for and love her around her. In order to prevent Helen from being sent to an orphanage, her mother Kate (Kate Greenhouse) enlists the help of a governess named Anne (Alison Elliott) in the hope that Anne will be able to teach Helen to coexist peacefully with her flaws.
At first, Helen is not at all receptive to Anne's teachings, which makes the lessons difficult. At Anne's repeated insistence, Kate and her husband agreed to allow Anne and Helen to have individual lessons with just the two of them, but only for two weeks. It was during these two weeks that Anne gradually changed Helen's life.
