Luminosity masking is an advanced photo editing technique that helps you achieve complete control over your images. Simply put, luminosity masks make selections in your image based on the lightness values in the image, allowing you to easily target highlights, shadows, or midtones.
Once you make a selection with a luminosity mask, the possibilities are endless. Whether you aim to adjust brightness, color, contrast, or even shape light, the selection you make with the luminosity mask can be applied to any adjustment or photo layer in Photoshop.
The easiest way to learn is by playing around with luminosity masking for yourself. There are lots of Photoshop panels on the market that can make these advanced masks, but my favorite is the TK Lum-Mask Panel, which is free at the time of this posting.
