“When I'm making sculptures, I'm always thinking about using recycled materials for them, and repurposing objects,” says the artist. “Thinking of animism and the energy that these materials hold is really important to what I'm exploring.”
In this clip from our new film, artist Guadalupe Maravilla (@guadalupe__maravilla) creates a gong from recycled materials for his piece, “Mariposa Relámpago,” or Lightning Butterfly in English. What was once an ordinary school bus is now a richly decorated, mobile site for remembrance and healing.
"’Mariposa Relámpago’ has around 700 objects. Every object has a meaning for me. Part of the work is to actually find the objects.”
Inspired by the ornate buses of his youth, the artwork is adorned with over 700 objects, ranging from healing instruments like gongs to personally symbolic objects like a pair of children’s shoes.
“I was in Mexico City and I saw a pair of metallic silver slippers, and it looked like a child had been walking for a lot of time. I almost got emotional when I saw it, and I felt the energy of the walking and all the unaccompanied, displaced children that were traveling with me.”
