If you’ve ever wondered how to get that creaky, crackly sound in your voice, you’re about to learn a fun singing technique that’s both simple and powerful: vocal fry.
Vocal fry is actually a distinct register of the voice, sitting lower than your speaking range. You’ve probably slipped into it without thinking, especially when your voice gets lazy or tired. It’s that gravelly “uhh” sound that almost feels like your voice is buzzing. To find it, just drop your pitch as low as you can and let your voice relax into that creaky tone. Another trick is to imitate the sound of a door slowly creaking open—yes, that works too!
Once you can make the fry sound, the next step is to play with it. Try sustaining it on its own, then add a little pitch. See if you can slide the pitch up and down while staying in fry. For most singers, vocal fry works best as an onset, meaning it’s the way you start a note. That’s why we’ll begin with low notes. A great exercise is to take the word “we,” letting the W fry and then singing out the “ee.” Start on a comfortable pitch like G2 or G3, slowly walking the notes up and back down.
You can also try it with “yeah,” beginning with the fry and then sliding into the note. Move up and down through your range, keeping it relaxed.
Beyond being a cool stylistic effect in pop, R&B, and rock singing, vocal fry is also useful for strengthening cord closure if your voice tends to sound weak or airy. It’s a versatile tool that every singer should explore. Have fun experimenting with vocal fry and see how it transforms your singing voice.
