About this violin masterclass:

Partita No. 3 in E Major (Loure and Gavotte en Rondeau) by Johann Sebastian Bach

0:00 Intro and playing part from Luca Dumitru Amarandei
5:36 Advice part from @alissamargulis7271

Luca Dumitru Amarandei performs two movements of Bach's third partita. One of the first recommendations Professor Alissa Margulis makes is to approach historicist practice, either by listening to recordings of baroque instruments or by playing with a baroque bow, in order to understand the conditions under which such music was written. She also discusses the dances that make up the partita and their popular origin. One of the essential elements of the dance is the rhythm, so the Professor asks the student to be precise and recommends the subdivision of the long notes to play them with their exact value. She also talks about the original bowings, articulation and polyphony of this piece. Professor Margulis suggests the student to add ornaments in the repetitions as it was done at the time. Finally, they work on the Gavotte and Professor Margulis suggests a more fun character for this dance while maintaining the pulse.

What we learn:
- Characteristics of each dance.
- Rhythm and how to make it more precise.
- Ornamentation.
