8:56 Advice part from Lars Anders Tomter
In this masterclass, Professor Lars Anders Tomter is accompanied by young violist student Gustavo Vieira Rebelo playing the first and second movement of Schubert’s Sonata for Arpeggione and Piano in A minor, D. 821, written in Vienna, November 1824. Professor Lars Anders Tomter reminds his student that this is not a very typical sonata but rather had been commissioned by one of Schubert’s friends, almost as a showcase study. The work consists of three movements, where a typical performance can be quite long, he says. One needs to learn how to keep momentum and a good posture in order to avoid losing focus during storytelling. While the novelty of the arpeggione has long since vanished together with the instrument itself, Professor Tomter encourages his student to revisit these great movements with a modern instrument and an intrigued mindset.
What we learn:
- This requires quite a lot of momentum; avoid losing it,
- The importance of minimizing body movements while playing,
- Being too careful while training often translates as boring,
- The differences of registry between cello and viola and where to stand,
- The ergonomics and economics of articulations.
