Urs Fischer's swiss cultural background, where there is no particular emphasis on identity, didn’t push him to position himself or to have a statement that allows the public to catalog him within an specific art movement. Fischer never tried to have any artistic identity and thus felt as an outsider in the art world.
During a postgraduate program in Amsterdam he confronted himself with other young art students that had a more academic education. Witnessing all kinds of artist archetypes he crafted his interests and learned from them through their references. It also allowed Fischer to find freedom in his practice when he understood that art can take many forms through time and that he could tap into several periods to find inspiration and growth.
Urs Fischer’s fascination with the aesthetic beauty of cinema and its artificiality became a source of inspiration, leading the artist to experiment with organic materials like fruits, vegetables, and wax in his creations. The impermanence of these materials symbolizes a deeper reflection on life, mortality, and the transient nature of existence. Each sculpture, painting, or creation embodies a moment captured in time, echoing the essence of the artist's emotional and intellectual path. The artist illustrates his remarks by evoking in turn his iconic series: Problem Paintings, his wax sculptures and Big Clays, giant aluminum enlargements of small clay forms he creates with his own hands.
Fischer's art resonates with the rawness and improvisational spirit of Jazz, infusing his pieces with spontaneity and energy. His affinity for mark-making and quick, expressive gestures mirrors the fluidity and movement found in nature, translating into abstract and figurative representations. Fischer’s process of creation is a delicate balance between control and spontaneity, where each artwork encapsulates a unique moment of artistic expression. For him, the exploration of art remains a deeply personal and introspective journey.
