"Treat Her Like A Lady" marked a remarkable comeback for The Temptations in 1984, becoming their biggest hit in nearly a decade. After struggling to maintain their chart presence throughout the late 1970s and early 1980s, this song proved that the legendary group still had plenty to offer.
The song came about when founding member Otis Williams grew concerned about changing attitudes toward women in the early 1980s. He was hearing troubling stories about men not treating women with proper respect, which inspired him to create something that would celebrate women's dignity. The actual writing happened quite naturally—Williams was at home with the group's newest member, Ali-Ollie Woodson, and they just started jamming at the piano. What began as casual improvisation became their most successful single in years.
Woodson himself brought impressive credentials to The Temptations. Before joining in 1983, he had sung with Harold Melvin's Blue Notes and worked with artists like Aretha Franklin. He wasn't just a great vocalist—he could play keyboards, drums, and bass, and had strong songwriting skills that proved invaluable to the group's revival.
The production was handled by Al McKay and Ralph Johnson, both former members of Earth, Wind & Fire who had recently struck out on their own as producers. McKay had co-written classics like "September" and "Sing a Song," while Johnson brought his rhythmic expertise as EWF's drummer. Together, they crafted a sound that honored The Temptations' sophisticated vocal tradition while embracing the polished production style of the 1980s.
The song was a genuine hit, reaching number 2 on the R&B charts and number 48 on the Hot 100—their best showing since "Shakey Ground" back in 1975. It also found success internationally, hitting number 12 in the UK and charting well across Europe and New Zealand. The accompanying album "Truly for You" became their first top-five R&B album in nearly a decade.
What made this comeback so special was how The Temptations managed to stay true to their identity while adapting to contemporary sounds. The song's message about treating women with respect felt both timely and timeless, delivered with the group's trademark elegance and Woodson's commanding yet smooth lead vocals.
"Treat Her Like A Lady" remains a standout moment in The Temptations' long career, proving that great artists can successfully reinvent themselves without losing what made them special in the first place. It introduced a new generation to their music while reminding longtime fans why they fell in love with the group's sophisticated sound and thoughtful approach to relationships.
