1. Paganini had rumoured connections with the Devil, including tales that he had sold his soul in exchange for musical ability. He was simply too good for people to believe that such talent could exist in a human without diabolic connections. He lived a relatively wild life, with plenty of tempestuous love affairs and suffered from syphilis, for which he was prescribed mercury and opium

2. Paganini had recitals where he broke all the strings on his violin and kept playing - this gave him a reputation for being crazy, so they locked him up.

3. He was such a skilled violinist that he could play 12 notes per second & it was said that his talent was a gift from the devil. He was particularly known for performing recitals without sheet music.

Another story I recall reading about him was where, in the middle of a performance, all of the strings on his violin broke one after the other, until he was left with only the G string, the lowest one. Any other player would have interrupted the performance long enough to restring the instrument. Paganini kept right on playing on the single string left to him, and brought the piece to a successful conclusion.
