If you’ve ever struggled with painting flowers in acrylic, you’re in the right place. In this video, I’m sharing my top five acrylic flower painting techniques to help you create realistic, luminous petals that actually look alive. Acrylics can dry fast and feel tricky to blend, but with the right layering and color choices, you can paint soft, dimensional flowers every time.
We’ll go step by step through the most important techniques for painting flowers in acrylic, including layering for depth, using warm and cool colors to create texture, and creating soft edges that make your petals glow. Whether you’re new to acrylics or want to take your flower paintings to the next level, these tips will help you paint with confidence and control.
Grab your brushes and paint along with me! These acrylic flower painting tips will change the way you see floral subjects forever.
My favourite palette for painting flowers is a split primary palette, with the following colors: quinacridone magenta, cadmium red medium, cadmium yellow medium, cadmium yellow light, phthalo blue (green shade), ultramarine blue (red shade), burnt umber and titanium white. This is also the palette that I use in my color mixing course.
