I was doing a photoshoot with a model in Yangshuo, China when we spotted this figure. Coming from the United States, I had never seen someone so epic and majestic. I could not pass up the opportunity to ask him to do a photoshoot. It would be difficult to communicate as I don’t speak the same native language of the land. My model and friends who were behind me were also too intimidated to approach the man. So I had to strategize how to respectfully request him to do a photoshoot. I translated my ask into Mandarin on my smartphone. We approached him, and he said yes. Afterwards, my friends and model helped me translate instructions to capture a few specific portraits that I had visualized beforehand. At first, he was under the impression that it was going to be finished after a few minutes. But it turned into several hours. As a result of the full-fledged photoshoot, he was missed out on his opportunity to continue fishing and making his day’s income; therefore, he wanted to go home along with his coworkers. However, we did some convincing and we handsomely compensated him for his time, so we kept shooting all the way into nightfall. After going home and reviewing what was captured, I can confidently say that this is one of the best collection of images that I have ever taken in my last ten years as a working professional photographer.
