I learned so much about Camille Claudel’s process by looking closely at these terracotta studies in this stunning exhibition of her work at the The Getty Museum. https://www.getty.edu/visit/cal/events/ev_3931.html

Below is info on the last piece in this reel, where I showed the comparison between the terracotta study and the final marble piece.

Here is what the museum plaque on the terracotta study said:

“Sakuntala is one of the few works by Claudel for which several preliminary studies survive.

The tight embrace of a nude man and woman illustrates the climactic moment in an ancient Sanskrit play when a king rediscovers his lover.

Claudel probably made the two studies at left from life, applying stretched-out lumps of clay to form the well-defined bodies.

She then modeled the far-right sketch using ropes and balls of clay crudely pressed together.”

Here is what was on the wall regarding the final marble sculpture:

“Claudel’s first major success was the large plaster group Sakuntala, which earned honorable mention and glowing reviews when exhibited in Paris in 1888.

The artist was unsuccessful, however, in securing a commission from the French government for a marble version of the group.

The depiction of two lovers embracing was inspired by a Sanskrit play by the fifth-century Indian writer Kalidäsa, in which King Dushyanta loses his memory of his beloved Sakuntala.

Claudel captured the scene of the lovers’ reunion, with the king falling at Sakuntala’s feet.

In the early 1900s, Claudel reworked her composition, presenting it with different titles.”
