Theatre People On September 21 | Little Shop of Horrors Day

Every September 21, while others celebrate Earth, Wind & Fire, theatre people celebrate a plant seemingly not of the earth at all.

On the 21st day of the month of September in an early year of a decade not too long before our own, the human race encountered a deadly threat to its very existence. And this terrifying enemy surfaced - as such enemies often do - in the seemingly most innocent and unlikely of places.

And that place was Off-Broadway. A smaller, more intimate theatre is exactly where Howard Ashman felt Little Shop of Horrors thrived. Large-scale productions would be more likely to obscure the humanity that centers the story’s tragedy and its universality. Though there were offers, the original Little Shop never transferred to Broadway by design.

Little Shop opened at the Orpheum Theatre, and hanging above the stairwell to the balcony is a mean, green poster for that original production of Little Shop.
