I see this mistake ALL the time in our studio, and no one believes me when I tell them how to fix it ????

People want a seamless look on the background, but shoot themselves in the foot by pushing the backdrop up against the wall. This creates a dark line along the transition as it is the furtherest point from the key light, and it can be a pain to fix if you want to do so during editing.

Instead, you want to pull the backdrop out quite far and have it gradually slope away from the subject, keeping the distance between the paper and the key light relatively the same, and in doing so ending up with a similar brightness along the entire background.

Of course there are many reasons not to do this too, and you could even argue this is now an expected aesthetic with the amount of ‘improperly’ designed cycloramas you see in studios these days - but keep this tip in mind if you want this look, as you’ll end up with better shots straight out of camera!
