How do we know what type of vibrato to use? How do we know what notes get what vibrato? Choosing the "right" vibrato for a certain passage can be elusive and complex to sort out. As master cellist Gary Hoffman notes, directions about vibrato are not written in the music, nor can we wait for our teacher to tell us what to do. Instead, he suggests we practice without vibrato, only thinking about the bow, and finding all the expression in the bow possible. Only then should we add vibrato-- the "missing component that makes the sound come alive."
