When an older student asks me what scale is the best overall for them to learn, I have a great one. The scale is a 7-tone two octave 3-note per string shape. It covers all six strings and is easy to memorize. Overall, it’s an excellent choice for any older student, especially if they’ve never learned a scale before.

This scale shape is perfect for both Major & Minor soloing. It can offer us some truly excellent guitar licks from its highly uniform design. The pattern itself is not only easy to memorize, but it really shows itself when creating melody.

Next to the 5-note pentatonic the shape for today’s lesson is one of the best layouts that there is when it comes to learning scales on guitar.

Everything comes down to this scales uniform geometrical design. When we combine that with the scales large 2-octave span we end up with a full sound from its 7-tones that’s ready for any type of melody or guitar solo.

The lesson will break down how this shape sits on the neck as both Major & Minor patterns. We’ll then use its major tonality notes to help establish a strong chord harmony that will relate directly to the scales structure.

After that, I’ll use a group of four chords from the harmony that we established to build a chord progression. The progression will be used as a backdrop for an example solo I created which uses the notes of the lesson’s scale.
