A single song was enough to break the spell of her confinement.

To the Victorian eye, this room is immediately recognizable not as a family home, but as a place of hidden vice. The furniture is too new, the colors too garish, and the woman’s hands are ringless. She is a "fallen woman," a mistress kept in a gilded cage for the man's amusement.

But the artist, William Holman Hunt, has captured the precise millisecond of a spiritual revolution. The man has begun playing "Oft in the Stilly Night," a song about past innocence and childhood memories. The melody has struck her like a physical blow. She rises from his lap, staring past the viewer into a spiritual distance he cannot see.

Look closely at the bottom of the canvas. Under the table, a cat plays cruelly with a bird with a broken wing. It is a brutal mirror of her own situation—she is the bird, trapped by a predator. But the mirror in the background reflects a sunlit garden, symbolizing the light of redemption. She is turning her back on the darkness of the room, ready to escape.
