The story of The King and the Beggar-Maid is a romantic medieval tale that highlights themes of love, humility, and the idea that genuine beauty lies beyond social status. The tale centers around King Cophetua, a ruler who, unlike other kings, is completely indifferent to romance and uninterested in women. That changes one day when he catches sight of a beggar-maid named Penelophon (sometimes simply "the Beggar-Maid") who is so lovely and pure-hearted that he is instantly captivated. Her beauty and grace are unmatched by any noblewoman he has ever seen, and he is struck by the simplicity and dignity she holds, even in her poverty.

King Cophetua approaches her, and, to her surprise, he proposes marriage. He wants to offer her not only love but a life of wealth and status. Although the maid is initially hesitant due to their differences in rank, Cophetua’s sincerity wins her over. He abandons his royal pride and materialism, genuinely desiring her companionship over any riches or grandeur his kingdom offers. The two marry, and she becomes his queen, ruling alongside him with wisdom and kindness, beloved by all.

The story of The King and the Beggar-Maid has been popular for centuries, inspiring poets, painters, and writers alike. Alfred, Lord Tennyson even immortalized the tale in his poem “The Beggar Maid,” capturing the contrast between royalty and poverty and the king’s awe at the maid’s inner beauty.
