Here we have the Illustrated Mahabharata, published by DK. This book contains together with the re-told stories of the Mahabharata hundreds upon hundreds of images showing artworks, artefacts, photographies, maps and statues.

The book is bound in paper. It’s Smyth-sewn and printed on photographic paper throughout. The quality of the images are generally good as you can see in this video. This book is printed and bound in China.

I noticed two things with this book, being the first book from DK that I have bought. Firstly, the book doesn’t have a head or tailband, which is a bit strange. And the binding doesn’t feel particularly sturdy, but I hope it will manage the somewhat heavy weight of the photographic paper.

Overall this a fantastic companion book when reading the Mahabharata to get a good feel of the time period and of Indian culture as a whole. A lot of cultural aspects are explained in the book with accompanying illustrations.

For a beginner diving in to the world of Indian epics and history, this is really a gem to own and I definitely recommend it.
