The most expensive painting ever sold by Leonardo da Vinci is "Salvator Mundi", which sold for a staggering $450.3 million at an auction held by Christie's in November 2017. The painting, which depicts Jesus Christ holding a crystal orb in his left hand while giving a benediction with his right, was believed to have been painted around the year 1500.

"Salvator Mundi" (Latin for "Savior of the World") has a fascinating and controversial history. For centuries, it was thought to be lost, and it resurfaced in poor condition in the early 2000s, heavily overpainted and damaged. After extensive restoration, experts eventually attributed the painting to Leonardo, though some still debate the extent of his involvement in its creation. This attribution is part of what made the sale so remarkable.

The buyer was later revealed to be a close associate of the Saudi crown prince, Mohammed bin Salman, and the painting is rumored to be housed in a secret location, possibly set to be displayed in a cultural center in Saudi Arabia.
