The artist behind this piece was Paul McCarthy. He, too, knew what “Tree” looked like to the common eye, and he envisioned the entire installation as one big joke.

A disrespect to a holiday he despised because of what it had come to represent, he had done something similar before in Rotterdam. After the piece was deflated, he refused to put it up again, seeing no point in telling the same joke twice.

Regarding his distaste, he stated in a 2021 interview:

“Consumer culture is so destructive. Santa Claus is the god of consumerism. It’s just so iconic for me; it’s a signifier of Western civilization.”

“There’s something about this living thing that we cut down and decorate in our living rooms. There’s something super [messed] up about that, at least to me. These things are grown in Christmas farms and then just whacked off.”
