Tesla battery supplier Panasonic still plans to launch trial production of the revolutionary 4680 cells in 2022. It will need to be on top of its game, too, as Panasonic executives have revealed Tesla has put in a massive order for the new cells as the journey of the 4680 battery is set to begin soon.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk revealed on the fourth-quarter earnings call that the automaker is ready to launch the 4680 cells, along with the structural battery pack, in the Gigafactory Texas-built Model Y.
With plans to convert more of the company’s vehicles to the new technology, particularly 4680 batteries, Tesla will need all the help it can get, as it’s unlikely to make enough new batteries in-house to support its manufacturing capacity.
Tesla applied for a license to expand its Gigafactory in Texas to produce cathodes for battery production. The Giga Texas cathode plant could contribute to Tesla’s 4680 production plan in Austin.
During Tesla’s fourth-quarter and full-year earnings call, CEO Elon Musk confirmed that the Giga Texas Model Y vehicle will be equipped with the company’s structural battery pack and 4680 cells. He announced that Model Y vehicles built in late 2021 were already built with Tesla’s structural battery pack and 4680 cells.
According to Drew Baglino, tesla’s senior vice president of powertrain and energy engineering, the company is making progress on 4680 and pack tool installations in Giga Texas. Tesla has also made significant progress in 4680 battery production at Kato, California. Baglino noted that tesla manufactures 4680 structural packs everyday, which are assembled into vehicles in texas.
Tesla plans to begin delivering the Model Y, built-in Giga Texas, to customers after final certification. The Texas Environmental Quality Commission approved Tesla’s Austin manufacturing facility on January 20, 2022. However, Tesla still has a few other licenses awaiting the commission.
