There are numerous reasons why your telephoto shots may not be sharp, but this one may be out of your hands...

When I started shooting telephoto shots of subjects far in the distance, I ended up with unsharp images. This led me to question the quality of my lens, whether or not my focus was working, and even if I was shooting the scene properly. Finally, I realized that the softness in my images may have been due to something entirely out of my control.

The further away your subject is, the more atmosphere you're looking through to capture an image. Since you can't see objects far away in great detail with your eyes, this can be hard to imagine since you can't replicate this to the naked eye. However, because the telephoto lens can be seen much further away, any heat waves or atmosphere distortion can negatively affect your images.

Ideally, you should get as close to the subject as possible to avoid this softness. Otherwise, there isn't much you can do to prevent soft images when shooting at extreme focal lengths!
