This Friday, the second episode of the Practical Guide on Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue is making its way to you, and I thought it would be fun to tackle one of the coolest sections with you today.
This Poco agitato is a fun reimagining of the piano solo theme with a really cool rhythmic groove which was introduced a little bit earlier in the piece. The difficulty of this section though, is not necessarily in the rhythm, but in the swift movement of the left hand, combined with a rather wide movement in the right hand, which can easily get tense or tiring. So in order to avoid it, here are some steps you can do:
1. Always make a straight line from the playing finger(s) towards your elbow. This will automatically cause your wrist to move, which helps it relax.
2. Finish this wrist movement by circling back to solidify the relaxation.
3. Keep your knuckles firm to support the fingers in the circle motion.
4. Fetch the notes with your left hand, so you feel secure and at ease.
Practicing this without pedal and in a slower tempo really allows you to listen, not only to your sound, but also to your body, so you can work away any tense feelings or sections.
