Ready to strum “Sweet Child O’ Mine”? In this beginner-friendly guitar lesson, I show you how to play the song in standard tuning so you can practice along without retuning. The original recording sits a half-step down (Eb Ab Db Gb Bb Eb), so if you want to jam with the track, simply drop everything one semitone.

We’ll keep things simple and musical: mostly open chords—D, C (or an easier Cadd9), G, and A—plus some new shapes for the solo, including Em, Am, and a B or B7 option. I’ll demo two strumming patterns: a super-accessible “down, down-up, down-up, down-up,” and a late-beginner syncopated groove where we skip the down on beat three. You’ll learn where each pattern fits across the verse, chorus, and interlude.

In the solo, we change both chords and feel, accenting 1, the “&” of 2, and 4. I’ll walk you through slow, count-along reps so the syncopation clicks.
