Mbalax, also spelled [mbalakh], is a popular dance music genre from the West African countries of Senegal and The Gambia. It's a fusion of Western popular music and dance, such as jazz and soul, with the musical traditions of the Serer people. The name "mbalax" comes from the rhythm played by the mbëngmbëng drum in a set of sabar.
