Here’s an update to my video from last September, once again dedicated to my arrangement of "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" — this time including the sheet music.
The song has been adapted in the key of C, a change from the classic Ab major version composed by Harold Arlen for The Wizard of Oz. My arrangement focuses on the opening section’s harmonic movement, which defines the spirit and timeless beauty of the piece in my view.
Rather than faithfully duplicating the chords from Judy Garland’s original performance, my version blends influences from various modern interpretations and simplified covers. Some subtle reharmonizations are woven into the progression: for example, a tritone substitution leads into the first Fadd9, and a following Bm7b5/F adds extra color and melancholy. This touch is echoed by the next Cadd9/E, which is part of my personal reinterpretation. Throughout, the use of C/G and a suspended dominant chord at the cadence marks other unique choices I made. Where the original might use D7 for a more traditional dominant chain, I opted for Dm7 to soften the transition between A7, D7, and G7.
