The Venice Biennale is an international exhibition that occurs every two years and features artists from around the world who mount work in their respective nations' pavilions. The U.S.'s choice this year was Simone Leigh. Leigh is best known for for monumental sculptures that celebrate the beauty and grace of black femininity. Central to Leigh's practice is creating physically imposing, sculptural works that make interventions in galleries and public spaces. For example, this work titled "Sentinel IV" is an abstracted and elongated female figure that almost dwarfs its onlookers. Referencing archival photographs and black material culture, Leigh reinterprets and adds new meaning to relics of white supremacy. Working within a radical black feminist tradition, she focuses exclusively on the female form, making much-needed interventions into racist iconography. #blackart #africandiaspora #blackfeminism
