Here's a new and unique way of giving a guitar lesson without speaking a word or not even playing my guitar (well, almost).
This short video is for people that might be quick learners and prefer an 'instant overview" of how a fingerpicking pattern is built. In this Short, I am showing a version of an easy Travis Style picking pattern, which is one that every guitarist that wants to play fingerstyle should learn.
Many of you are going to enjoy watching this video as there's really nothing like it on YouTube. But If you want to learn this pattern and play what I did in this video:
Step 1: Press your index or middle finger just below fret two on string 4 (you can clearly see where that is in the video) Given the strings that we are plucking, this forms an A7sus2 chord (yes, a 1 fingered chord).
Step 2: Using your thumb, pluck strings 5 and 4, back and forth (thumb stings are lit up in red). The idea is to play along when the string lights up. This video will not only show you this extremely popular fingerpicking pattern but also help you get into the groove. You will of course want to spend a lot more time practicing, so I encourage you to not move ahead until you really can play the thumb only part well... then move to Step 3.
Step 3: We are going to add another string and this time it is string 3 which is lit up in green. This string is an open note meaning, we don't need to do anything other than hold down your finger in Step 1 and pluck this open string 3. Again, don't move ahead until you can really play with the thumb and index finger.
Step 4: We will add one more string to complete the pattern- String 2 which is blue and plucked with your middle finger.
Lastly, on top of the strings located just above the bridge, you will see the following letters with a dark oval background - T, I, M ,,,, these are the fingers on the right hand we are using to pluck the strings.
T= Thumb
I = Index
M = Middle
At the end of the video, the magic happens as we get to hear the pattern and a regular tempo/speed. It might take some time on your part, but if you work at it a little each day, this speed is possible for almost anyone.
As I stated earlier, if you need sheet music and a highly detailed learning experience (yes, with me talking and taking my time), do visit the full series at the link above. There I also provide a free study guide and sheet music. This is especially valuable if you are first starting out on guitar as I answer just about any question for first time guitarists.
Now for the rest of you quick learners, let me know if you like this new format and if you were able to play this pattern from watching this "Silent Film Fingerpicking" video? I'd love to do more of these if you find it helpful!!
Wishing you a great guitar day! bob
