Shanghai lockdown: Dutch ex-pat describes life in the city under strict COVID-19 restrictions

On Friday, Dutch national Jaap Grolleman will have be quarantined in a tiny flat in Shanghai with his partner for three weeks. Recent positive COVID-19 cases among neighbours means he faces at least another two weeks of isolation.

The marketing ex-pat has not been able to return home for three years and feels "more heartbroken than angry" with the way the Chinese financial hub, which reported 15,698 new local asymptomatic coronavirus cases for April 21, has dealt with the health crisis.

According to the 32-year-old, half of his residential compound of around 3,000 people have been affected by COVID-19 and this has resulted in him only spending 15 minutes outside his home since April 1.

"We do see that even compounds that have been locked for several weeks, there are still new infections suddenly coming out of nowhere… when is this going to end?" he said.

For food supplies, Grolleman purchases most of it through group buying communities on China's dominant messaging app WeChat.
