The surprisingly wild and remote Shetland Islands are home to the highest density of otters in Europe. But despite their numbers, otters are extremely shy and difficult to observe.
This film is narrated by Shetland native Brydon Thomason. He has been observing Shetland otters for thirty years and knows the habits of these endearing animals.
Otters are a species that lives dangerously. The otter's mother is solely responsible for the upbringing of her young - she teaches them to dive, hunt and fish, and gradually leads them towards independence. When the cubs are a year old and have completed their education, the mother stays close to her daughters but drives off her male cubs, forcing them to start a new life on their own. This film tells the story of a family of otters and their attempt to survive in the harsh conditions of Scotland's northern islands.
