During the first millennium CE, Europe underwent significant changes. The Roman Empire rose and fell, migrations occurred, and medieval institutions began to form, laying the foundations for the modern world. One of the most profound transformations happened in lowland Britain after the Romans left in the fifth century. This period saw major changes in material culture, architecture, manufacturing, and farming, as well as a shift in language.Archaeological evidence and place names suggest that the culture in areas around the North Sea, particularly along the east and southeast coasts of present-day England, Schleswig-Holstein and Lower Saxony (Germany), Frisia (Netherlands), and the Jutland peninsula (Denmark), shared many similarities.
