Maksymilian Piotrowski’s painting Death of Wanda (ca. 1859) depicts the tragic legend of Princess Wanda, a figure in Polish folklore. According to legend, Wanda was the daughter of Krakus, the mythical founder of Kraków. When a German prince, Rüdiger, proposed marriage, Wanda refused, determined to keep her independence and protect her kingdom. In retaliation, Rüdiger threatened war. But rather than allow her people to suffer, Wanda sacrificed herself, throwing herself into the Vistula River, thus securing peace.
