Deciding between primes and zoom lenses isn't easy, as each has its advantages and drawbacks.

On one hand, prime lenses are usually lighter, more compact, cheaper, and have a larger maximum aperture than their zoom lens counterparts. While this isn't always the case, you'll generally find prime lenses with apertures as low as f/2.8, f/1.8, or even f/1.2. Most zoom lenses top out around f/2.8 at best.

So why would one even consider buying a zoom lens? Truly, the versatility of a zoom lens is unmatched. Rotating the barrel allows one to capture a variety of scenes, which is incredibly powerful.

You've probably heard the saying that "prime lenses are sharper." While this may have been true years ago, the difference in sharpness between a high-quality prime lens and a high-quality zoom lens is negligible.

So... primes and zooms are different, and the kind of photography you do will dictate which one will work best for you. For landscape photography, I love using zoom lenses and having a prime lens or two in my bag, specifically for astrophotography (looking at you, 14mm f/2.8).
